Supply Chain Solutions No.8 – Is the Supplier Point of Contact, Right?
Initially, when meeting a new supplier, it is important to meet the business owner or decision makers, so both parties know each other’s company’s requirement, and there is a mutual understanding.
There will be a sales person assigned to your account; it is important to understand who this person is managing your business on a daily basis. They will become the backbone of the supplier relationship and key to your projects and future success.
It is important that you review this person like you would be interviewing a new employee. Are they capable from a product and company knowledge base, have the energy and attitude to support your business, and have the respect from their peers to be able to control the many aspects of your business through development and production.
Projects do fail because the assigned individual doesn’t have the attitude and skill, is assigned to many accounts or senior people in the organisation won’t listen to them resulting in your requirements not been followed.
Indirectly, it results in the project failing with the supplier; the real failure been the individual’s inability to push through your needs and be supported by the management. It may also be representative of the local culture, “don’t ask, do as your told.”
Having the right person in charge of your account is an essential component to the success of your project.
