Supply Chain Solutions No.5 – Suppliers Must Have Relevant Product Experience

Select suppliers that have specific experience with the type of project that you’re undertaking, having technical expertise and capabilities unique to the market, brand and product.  You don’t want to be a vendor “guinea pig.”

Just because the supplier has a similar sample in their show room doesn’t mean they have expertise, it may be old or possibly they didn’t make that product, it was subcontracted.

If a vendor can make cheap T-Shirts, it doesn’t mean they can make Denim Jeans, the skills and machinery to make these products are different.  Understand the manufacturing process for your product type, to identify the machinery and process needed.

This advice holds true for other types of projects and products. If your television is broken, you’ll get best results from a verifiable electrical engineer specialised in televisions and the related brand.  The same theory applies to product sourcing.

Best results come from vendors who have experience with similar markets, brands and product type.
