Fashion Textile Printing Introduction

This article is intended to give a basic introduction to the different textile printing methods and how they can be applied to fashion product.  Additionally, provided is a pricing matrix to be used as a guideline of the cost per metre once screen costs have been amortised into the price and quantity increases.

INTRODUCTION TO TEXTILE PRINTING METHODS

FLAT SCREEN PRINTING

Utilised in continuous fabric printing, suitable for Rayon, Cotton, Linen, Polyester, Nylon and many other blends.  Limitations exist that make rotary printing more suitable when joining design motives they may cause join marks or registration difficulties.

Currently the most ecconomical printing method.

Screen Size

  • Continuous print screen size; Length 150cm Width 160cm maximum
  • Panel print manually screen size; Length 100cm Width 160cm maximum
  • Panel print automatic screen size; Length 80cm Width 80cm maximum

Screen Cost

  • Continous print screen cost approxiametly  RMB 350/screen
  • Panel print screen cost about RMB 150~350/screen

Printing Cost

  • Continous print cost per metre  approx. RMB 3/metre

Rotary Semi Automatic Panel Printing

ROTARY SCREEN PRINTING

Utilised in continuous fabric printing, suitable for Rayon, Cotton, Linen, Polyester, Nylon and many other blends.Recommended for vertical stripes or any designs with a continuous pattern and for designs with solid ground color and large coverage.

Screen Size

  • Design Repeat 64 to 102 cm (25 – 40 “) Subject to printing machine type

Screen Cost

  • Continous print screen cost approxiametly  RMB 500/screen

Printing Cost

  • Continous print cost per metre  approx. RMB 3/metre

Rotory Printing Machine

ROLLER PAPER PRINT + HEAT TRANSFER (Sublimation)

Utilised for nylon and polyester printing.  Recommended for large quantity printing as cost effective once screen costs have been amortized.  Excellent for half tone and photo printing but does not have the vibrancy of screen pigment printing

Screen Cost

  • Roller cost about RMB 2,000/Roller.

Print Cost

  • Continous print cost per metre  approx. RMB 2/metre

DIGITAL PAPER PRINT + HEAT TRANSFER (Sublimation)

Utilised for nylon and polyester printing .  Recommended for small to medium quantity printing.  Excellent for half tone and photo printing but does not have the vibrancy of screen pigment printing.

Great for continous printing panels for sports wear, swim and fashion.  Print repeats are less important, balancing panel printing more important.

Limitation is the print transfer colour sits on the surface of the fabric, if you print dark colour on light fabric, the sewing needle hole can show the fabric colour beneath the print.

DIGITAL DIRECT PRINTING

Utilised in continuous fabric printing, suitable for Rayon, Cotton, Linen, Polyester, Nylon and many other blends (dye stuff dependant).  Recommended for small quantity printing. Excellent for half tone and photo printing but does not have the vibrancy of screen pigment printing but pigment is becoming an option.

Great for fast fashion, quick leadtimes.

  • No Screen Required

Print Cost

  • Continous print cost per metre  varies depending on quantity, as a guideline RMB20-45/metres.  Price is quickly coming down as the technology developes.
